    Fundamentals of Building Green

    The construction industry is moving quickly towards greener, high-performing buildings, creating increased demand across the country for sustainable building skills.

    This course teaches the basics of sustainability and provides an overview of the essential strategies and work practices that make buildings more efficient. GPRO covers the “green gap” between standard trade skills and the new awareness required to successfully implement sustainable building practices.

    Individuals with experience in construction and building operations will have an advantage when taking Fundamentals of Building Green and in passing the certificate exam, but anyone with an interest in green building is encouraged to participate.

    GPRO Fundamentals of Building Green is the prerequisite for all GPRO trade-specific courses.

    Offered in partnership with Metro, USGBC-LA is pleased to present the Fundamentals of Green Building course in two installments. The course fee includes materials, instruction, and certification exam.

    Small businesses and non-profit partners of Metro qualify for a discounted registration and should use the code: METROPARTNERS when prompted.

    Studio One Eleven and Retail Design Collaborative recently repositioned a 34,000 SF former Nordstrom Rack facility in downtown Long Beach into their new creative office, making them one of the newest key anchor tenants for the development known as the STREETS (formally City Place). Since relocating the firm has seen some major cultural shifts and is currently pursuing LEED Platinum and WELL Gold Certifications. Please join us for a 45-minute walking tour, networking, snacks, ping pong and a little friendly game of basketball on our back patio! Hope to see you there.

    Veggie Bus is the 2017 USGBC-LA Legacy Project! 
    The Community Services Unlimited, Inc. (CSU) Veggie Bus Classroom Project will transform a no-longer operating bus into a classroom, plant nursery and seed library that will be permanently located at the Paul Robeson Community Wellness Center (PRCWC) in South Central Los Angeles. The Veggie Bus will become part of the urban farm and wellness center that is being developed at this site.

    Please join us as we work to transform the bus into a sustainable design destination! This is USGBC-LA's once monthly service day where volunteers are invited to assist in the design and renovation of the bus. All persons and talents are welcome! For your safety and comfort we recommend volunteers wear comfortable clothing for working outdoors and closed-toe shoes.

    Come join the San Gabriel branch of USGBC LA for a tour of Metro’s Division 24 Rail Maintenance Yard in the City of Monrovia awarded LEED BD+C New Construction Gold Certification in March 2016. Learn about sustainable features incorporated in the 3-story main building that houses offices and training facilities, a yard control room, repair and maintenance shops service up to 84 light rail vehicles.

    One of the best ways to prepare for any test is to work through sample questions. Our workshops conclude with an in- class practice exam and several take-home exams that accurately reflect the types of questions you'll see on the test. Included as part of the training, participants receive our comprehensive GreenStep WELL AP Study Guide that covers all of the important material and allows you to follow the outline of the course.

    Melissa Gutierrez-Sullivan, LEED AP and WELL AP, is founder and principal at Flourish – a Los Angeles based sustainability, health, and wellness consulting firm.  Melissa has been managing sustainability related projects since 2008, including LEED, sustainability reporting, and green finance projects - such as revolving loan funds, PACE, and green bonds.  In addition to sustainability Melissa is extremely passionate about health and wellness and has managed multiple WELL certification projects.  Melissa has been a member and volunteer for USGBC-LA for almost a decade and in 2012 co-founded the Women in Green Networking Group.  Melissa holds a bachelor degree from University of California, Los Angeles.

    Alex Spilger, WELL Faculty President, GreenStep

    Alex is President of GreenStep Education and a Senior Vice President with Cushman & Wakefield’s Project & Development Services practice. He has consulted on over 100 diverse green building projects with high profile clients such as Google, Salesforce, Skype, Square, Mozilla, GoPro, GAP, and the Wharton School of Business among others.

    Alex is currently managing the WELL Certification process of 6 WELL projects. He is the first WELL AP at Cushman & Wakefield and the first WELL Faculty in Northern California.

    Alex has taught over 300 Green Building Workshops across the globe through organizations such as the US Green Building Council (USGBC), American Institute of Architects (AIA), Sustainable Building Advisors Program and the Stanford Graduate School of Business to name a few. He has developed industry-leading WELL AP curriculum, helping hundreds of professionals to prepare to pass the WELL AP exam.

    Fundamentals of Building Green

    The construction industry is moving quickly towards greener, high-performing buildings, creating increased demand across the country for sustainable building skills.

    This course teaches the basics of sustainability and provides an overview of the essential strategies and work practices that make buildings more efficient. GPRO covers the “green gap” between standard trade skills and the new awareness required to successfully implement sustainable building practices.

    Individuals with experience in construction and building operations will have an advantage when taking Fundamentals of Building Green and in passing the certificate exam, but anyone with an interest in green building is encouraged to participate.

    GPRO Fundamentals of Building Green is the prerequisite for all GPRO trade-specific courses.

    Offered in partnership with Metro, USGBC-LA is pleased to present the Fundamentals of Green Building course in two installments. The course fee includes materials, instruction, and certification exam.

    Small businesses and non-profit partners of Metro qualify for a discounted registration and should use the code: METROPARTNERS when prompted.
